Teeth Whitening: Do You Really Need It?

Are you thinking about whitening your teeth? If you are, this guide is for you. Make sure you have all the knowledge you need before you jump in. As you may already know teeth color with age. The dentin (tooth interior), yellows and the outer layer, the namel, thins from brushing. If you drink coffee, tea, red wine; if you smoke or take certain medication, all of these factors can discolor your teeth even more.

Two Ways to Whiten Your Teeth

1. Remove surface stains from the enamel (outer layer)
2. Change the color of the dentin (tooth interior)

How to Whiten your Teeth

The first thing you should do is consult your teeth whitening dentist so you can get professional cleaning and mouth examination, even if you choose to do it at home. Sometimes all you need is a professional cleaning to get your teeth sparkle.

In addition, your dentist will look for cavities and your gums health. It is so much better to solve all these problems before you whiten your teeth.

Take the opportunity to ask your dentist about home whitening treatment and what to expect. Remember it’s natural for your teeth to become darker as you age and you should know all the pros and cons before you treat your teeth.

Whitening Toothpastes

Toothpaste works only in the outer layer of the teeth, and it’s for superficial stains. The visible effect is minimal. The toothpaste scrub away surface stains, making the teeth one shade lighter at the most, and last as long as you keep brushing your teeth with the whitening toothpaste.

Make sure you buy an approved whitening toothpaste to avoid any damage to the enamel.

If you want to change the color of the dentin, you have to bleach your teeth. It has a dramatic effect, and it can make your teeth three to eight shades whiter. You can also expect the color to last for about two to three years.

Professional Bleaching

For professional bleaching, your teeth whitening dentist will use hydrogen peroxide in a high concentration between 25 and 40 percent. Although this can potentially burn your gums, your dentist will cover them so they can be protected during treatment.

Some teeth whitening dentists will combine bleaching with a light or laser, but it has not been proven that this can make the treatment more effective.

At Home Bleaching

There are several at home treatments that come in several forms:

• Trays
• Gels
• Adhesive strips

For home bleaching, the concentration of the same chemicals is lower, i.e. between 5 to 15 percent hydrogen peroxide. Both methods are effective when used as directed.

Is it Safe?

The key is moderation. If you bleach your teeth over and over, like once a week, you can suffer from more sensitive teeth, and your teeth can appear yellower. You should always follow your teeth whitening dentist instructions when using whitening treatments. Keep in mind that white teeth are not necessarily healthy teeth. You need to brush and floss at least 2 times a day to maintain your teeth for a lifetime.

Avoid whitening your teeth at a mall kiosk, spa or any other place that is not your dentist's office. Your teeth and oral health is important, don´t leave it in the hands of a mall worker. Finally, follow these simple rules:

• Ask your teeth whitening dentist before you whiten your teeth.
• Tell your dentist if you feel sensitivity or if your gums get irritated.
